Rev. Canon J. J. Ransome-Kuti
Anglican priest and composer, 1855 to 1930, one of the first to write church music in Yoruba poetic and musical idiom. The 1923 CMS Yoruba hymnal Ìwé Orin Mímọ́ carries an appendix of 67 Yoruba hymns he composed, and in 1922 he recorded 43 songs in London for Zonophone, including a funeral lament and an “Abeokuta National Anthem”. Many of these hymns are still sung; their individual titles are still to be added to the archive.
